STRIDE Lab | Self Leadership (second edition)

A STRIDE Lab on self leadership.

We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, therefore, is not a single act but a habit

- Aristotle

Leadership has become the hallmark of our times. Whatever the problem, the answer seems to be leadership. At the same time, leadership remains a vague concept, always in need to be situated and locally embodied. STRIDE, as an “unSchool of Entrepreneurial Leadership,” turns the lean start-up and design thinking philosophy to leadership itself. Offering a radical empirical/experiential approach to leadership, we do not start with a clear answer and the five virtues of leadership; instead, we take leadership as a serious, practical concern and initiate a quest. When leadership becomes a “fuzzy goal,” we embark on a learning journey through an ongoing process of experience, observation, theory, and experimentation. Along the way, leadership will be “re-invented” and co-created both in thoughts, speech, and acts, as well as in technologies materials and new “choreographies.”

In this Lab, we start from the observation that the idea of leadership, and its glorification, is mostly contrasting our lived experience. From within, leadership often feels like a poor improvisation, at best as a lucky performance. As leaders, we mostly learn to make it look compelling from the outside. One of the most critical leadership qualities is, therefore, a sense of perspective. For ourselves, our health, our sustainable performance, peace of mind and for the people we work with, we are asked to observe closely and doubt the story we’ve been rewarded and paid for telling.

The STRIDE Learning Lab “Self-Leadership” approaches leadership with a strong emphasis on personal experience, reflection, and active experimentation: we start with our “self,” going back to our very habits of thinking, feeling and doing.
