The Rise of City States, with Klaus Wowereit and Parag Khanna

With an ever-increasing number of people living in urban areas, the economic, political, and social power of cities is increasing as well. The world’s richest 20 cities are home to 75 percent of the world’s largest companies; and there are far more functioning cities in the world than there are viable states. How can this growing power be accommodated? How can cities ensure they continue to function and thrive? And what does the rise of city states mean for Switzerland, which in many ways already is a „cities-state“?

Join us for a conversation with two proven experts on this field:former Berlin major Klaus Wowereit and best-selling author Parag Khanna.

Klaus Wowereit, Germany’s best-known city leader, was the Governing Major of Berlin form 2001-2014 and served as President of the German Bundesrat in 2001/02. Under his administration the city, marked by history and war, transformed into the hip and creative capital we know today. His long-term experience leading the rapidly developing city of Berlin has made Klaus Wowereit a hands-on specialist on the topic of city states.

Parag Khanna, a leading global strategist, world traveler, and best-selling author. He is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre on Asia and Globalisation at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. He is also the Managing Partner of Hybrid Reality, a boutique geostrategic advisory firm. Parag's latest book «Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization» discusses the rise of cities, and what it means for our increasingly connected world.

After the event we invite you to join us for an aperitif and you will have the opportunity to get your book signed by Parag Khanna.
