Effectuation: How Expert Entrepreneurs Bring Ideas to Life

Effectuation: How Expert Entrepreneurs Bring Ideas to Life

Start with What You Have
How do experienced entrepreneurs create something new when the future is uncertain? Rather than starting with a fixed goal and a detailed plan, expert entrepreneurs often start with what they already have. They ask: “Who am I?”, “What do I know?”, “Whom do I know?”
This is the core idea behind “Effectuation”, an entrepreneurial approach identified by researcher Saras Sarasvathy. She discovered and formulated the concept of Effectuation through research on how expert entrepreneurs think and make decisions under conditions of uncertainty.
Instead of trying to predict the future, effectual entrepreneurs take action based on the resources they have, learn from what happens, build partnerships, and adapt their direction as new possibilities emerge and their resource base changes.
In this hands-on workshop, you will
- Experience the principles of Effectuation through a practical exercise
- Learn about the theory behind them
- Reflect on how you can apply an effectual approach to your own (social) entrepreneurial ideas, projects, or ventures
The workshop is led by Dr. Susan Müller, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Head of the MSc in Entrepreneurship & Business Innovation at Bern University of Applied Sciences.
